This Is the Heart with Which to Take Communion

Quietly and carefully, I ask:
— With what heart would you have me and the church come to Communion?
“This is the heart with which to take Communion.
Imagine that you and I are alone together in a small room.
Tomorrow I am going out to die for you,
and as I look at you, I confess that I love you,
and I confess that I forgive you.
And then I say, with joy,
that I will willingly die for you.
How would your heart feel then?
With a heart so sorry and so grateful,
I want you to come to the table.
If you come to it with that heart,
you will feel deeply what was in my heart that night.”
