God’s Power Cannot Be Measured
At sixty, in the middle of life, I stop and stand still for a moment.
Tangled at times with ties I never wanted to be tangled with,
mixed at times with ties I never wanted to exchange a word with,
before some force that sweeps a person along whether they want it or not,
I stand dumbfounded.
With a head no better than a gourd dipper,
how can anyone understand the providence of God,
and with a capacity smaller than the cup we drink from every day,
how could anyone measure the whole of grace?
Yet people speak with confidence.
It is not in the books I studied, so God has no power;
it is not in what I know, so even God could never
do it—that is what they say.
Foolish humans.
If God could be known by their own common sense,
he would already have ceased to be God…
Do they really believe that humans came out of the dust?
Do they really believe that God created the heavens and the earth in six days?
That a man appeared and said, I am the Savior,
I will die on the cross for you,
believe in me and you can come to heaven—do they really find that believable?
People who believe what
human common sense like that could never understand,
people who have lost their minds—
how can they not believe that there are gifts from heaven
given to fit each believer?
Just because they have not received it does not mean it does not exist,
nor does it exist only when they can believe it…
Because I do not know how much time God has given me,
I have no time to linger persuading them.
Let those who do not know stay as they are, not knowing, and let us go on.
Those who struggle, bound by a common sense the size of a pebble,
let us leave them to their struggling, and go on.
How could they ever measure the power of God?
The stones scattered everywhere, not even big enough to be stumbling blocks in life,
I leave them all to Almighty God,
and simply, to fill the time that remains,
I take a step forward.
